What is Time and Points?
SummerNy Time and Points trials are non-sanctioned herding competitions where winners are based on the most points and the fastest time. They run just like other herding trials except for the following:
- No one knows the course until the morning of the trial
- The course is never pre-run with a dog in the competition - NO EXCEPTIONS
- The course can change with each round
- All livestock MUST go through each obstacle before continuing to next. (No skimming)
- Points are accumulated up to the time limit (you don't lose points)
- The amount of time for each run is usually 6 minutes or less
- Roughing up or running of stock results in penalty point loss and/or disqualification
- It is a no frills trial - no ribbons, no titles, no HIT, etc. Rankings are announced at the end of each round.
- It is less expensive (typically $10 - $15 per run, no charge for finals round (if there is a finals round))
How do Points Work for the Different Levels?
Handler/Dog teams run at whatever level they feel comfortable with. All dogs run the same course but with different handler lines.
All levels get the same amount of time. However, the point award changes per obstacle as follows:
- Started handler/dog teams may go anywhere except through obstacles
- Intermediate dog/handler teams generally have handler lines near center of the arena
- Advanced teams must stay at the post until a specified obstacle is completed
All levels get the same amount of time. However, the point award changes per obstacle as follows:
- Started gets 2.5 points per head per obstacle
- Intermediate gets 3.5 per head
- Advanced gets 5.0
